Exploring the intersection of technology and social good.

Marzia Binta Nizam

About Me

I am a third-year PhD student in Computer Science at UCSC, originally from Bangladesh. I am driven by a passion for exploring the intersection of technology and social good. My research spans several domains, including Computer Vision, Human Computation, ICTD (Information and Communication Technology for Development), Social Computing, and AI & Ethics. My work focuses on designing and developing innovative solutions that blend computational techniques with human input, emphasizing fairness, accessibility, and ethical AI practices.

My journey into technology for social good began during my time at BRAC, the largest NGO in the world. Working in BRAC's Technology for Development team allowed me to see firsthand how technology could address critical societal challenges. I led initiatives to improve education and workforce development in Bangladesh and East Africa. I designed and implemented a Business Intelligence platform to streamline data collection and analysis across BRAC's diverse social programs, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making. I also spearheaded the development of a digital platform to address skill gaps and promote employment opportunities, focusing on empowering underserved communities through technology.

Through my work, I hope to redefine the relationship between humans and technology, moving away from a "tech vs. human" mindset to embrace "tech for human." I am deeply committed to leveraging AI and computational tools to address societal challenges, advocate for ethical practices, and create equitable solutions for a better future.
